Ask your governed data from Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor

Datafor includes an MCP server. Connect the AI assistant you already use with a personal token, and every question runs as a governed query under your own account.

Same permissions as in Datafor

A model you cannot open is not listed. Row-level policies apply as usual.

Read only

The tools run queries and change nothing. No SQL, MDX, or other users’ data is exposed.

Personal, revocable tokens

Each token stands for one user, is shown once, expires, and can be revoked on its own.

Numbers come from Datafor

The client writes the wording; Datafor supplies the values and tells the client never to change them.

Two minutes to connect

1. Create a personal token

In Datafor, open My account, Personal tokens. Note the MCP address at the top of the page, click New token, and copy it: it is shown once.

2. Add Datafor to your client

Claude Code

Run this in a terminal, then reopen Claude Code. `claude mcp list` should show the server as connected.

claude mcp add --transport http datafor "<MCP address>" --header "Authorization: Bearer <token>"
Claude Desktop

Install the Datafor extension (datafor.mcpb, shipped with every installation) from Settings, Extensions, Install extension. Fill in:

URL             <MCP address>
Personal token  <token>
npx path (leave empty unless Claude cannot find npx; Node.js 18+ required)
ChatGPT desktop & Codex

Add this section to ~/.codex/config.toml (%USERPROFILE%\.codex\config.toml on Windows), then restart. The ChatGPT desktop app shares this configuration.

[mcp_servers."datafor"]
url = "<MCP address>"
tool_timeout_sec = 600
[mcp_servers."datafor".http_headers]
"Authorization" = "Bearer <token>"
Cursor, VS Code & others

Paste into the client's MCP configuration file and restart. Any client that speaks MCP over Streamable HTTP works the same way.

claude.ai & ChatGPT web

Cloud apps sign in with OAuth: add Datafor as a custom connector (claude.ai) or an app in developer mode (ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu) with the MCP address, then paste your personal token on the Datafor sign-in page. Requires the MCP address to be published over HTTPS.

claude.ai Customize > Connectors > Add custom connector
           URL: <MCP address> Authentication: Sign in now OAuth client: Register automatically
ChatGPT Apps > Create MCP server URL: <MCP address> Authentication: OAuth

3. Ask

  1. "Use Datafor to list the analysis models I can access."
  2. "Show the metrics and dimensions of the Sales model, then suggest a few questions."
  3. "Use Datafor to analyze: a business question you care about."

What the client can do

Four read-only tools

list_models
Lists the analysis models you may query.
explore_model
Describes one model as you may see it: metrics, dimensions, time fields.
generate_sample_questions
Suggests questions the model can answer.
ask_datafor
Answers one question with the result rows, the query behind them, and disclosures. Supports follow-ups and clarifications.

Administrators enable personal tokens and publish the MCP address. See theadministrator section of the guide.

Want to try it without installing?

Datafor Cloud is in early access. Tell us about your use case and we will set you up with a hosted workspace and sample data.
